Newfoundland 2026
At the end of May / early June, I had the fortune of taking a “short” 8-day trip to St. John’s, NL (in Canada for those who don’t know). Although the trip was not the typical vacation expectations, the area provided opportunities galore for images - from the moody to the magnificent, despite less than hospitable weather coming off the ocean. We did some travelling in the area but never made it too far from the home post at St John’s (Dildo to the north and the peninsula of St. Bride’s / placentia to the South at the furthest) and although the trip was too short to properly explore the province in any significance. That being said, it is a much bigger place than I thought and you can easily burn a day driving from town to town. Despite this I feel we say a lot - from puffins, wales and icebergs to historic landmarks and significant generational places.
As a recommendation, St. John’s is not for the average vacationers, or ate least of my age range (~30). The climate is cool and wet, and there isn’t a whole lot of “tourist” infrastructure compared to bigger places. St. John’s is old and not exactly an economic powerhouse. In general, it seems the more senior folk gravitate to the area for history more than anything else. That being said it was spectacular and I’m happy with the opportunity that was given to me to be there.
I am way too lazy and disorganized to provide a play-by-play of activities and places ventured, however all locations are on the South-Eastern area of Newfoundland (as per the map below). However some highlight locations outside of St. Johns were Ferryland, Bay Bulls and Cape St. Mary’s Ecological Preserve… along with a quaint little town called Dildo.
My cameras for this trip were the Canon 5D IV paired with Leica R glass (19mm, 28mm and 50mm) and a Helios 44-2. I also brought along and used a Leica (Panasonic) D-Lux 6 Point and shoot with EVF-3 attachment, which I used. waaaaayyy more that I anticipated I would. It’s such a good pocket-able quick use camera for its age.
